You want to automate what?!
While most of our customers have plants full of automation equipment,
nearly all still have some processes that they relegate to manual
assembly or manipulation. Usually this manual assembly continues
to take place because these processes are deemed “unsuitable”
for automation. But are they really? |

A client of ours had similar thoughts regarding automating the
TIG-welding of lithium batteries for the U.S. military. Conventional
wisdom classified this application as “manual” due to
its subjective nature. However, by applying equal doses of ingenuity
and new technology, Turner Machine was able to deliver a machine
that produces high quality TIG welds on over 2,000,000 batteries
per year! This machine featured liquid cooled, servo-driven rotating
part nests, dual pairs of TIG torches, an 8-station indexing table,
and the ability to change and gauge tungsten’s without interrupting
production. |

As demands for quality and consistency increase, while allowable
labor per part shrinks, the mindset of “we’ve always
done it that way” faces intense scrutiny. Just because it
hasn’t been done yet doesn’t mean that it can’t.
If you have a manual process that is giving you fits, give us a
call. You just may be surprised to hear us say “Sure! We can
do that!”
